Trust makes or breaks a leader March 17, 2025 by Vandana Shah in leadership coaching The leadership trust equation – How to build trust as a leader?Trust isn’t given. It’s earned. As a leader, your ability to build trust defines your influence. Without trust, there is no true leadership – only authority. So, how do you build trust? Think of it as an equation:Trust = Credibility + Reliability + Empathy – Self-interestHere’s how each element works:1.Credibility – Do people believe in what you say?→ Speak with honesty.→ Admit when you don’t know something.→ Deliver on your promises.2. Reliability – Can people count on you?→ Be consistent in actions, not just words.→ Follow through on commitments.→ Set clear expectations and meet them.3. Empathy – Do you understand your team?→ Listen to understand, not just respond.→ Show you care about their challenges.→ Give credit, support, and encouragement.4. Self-interest (The Trust Killer) – Are you leading for them or yourself?→ Make decisions for the greater good, not personal gain.→ Share successes, but own mistakes.→ Lead with integrity, even when it’s difficult.Trust is built in small moments. One broken promise, one ignored concern, and it starts to fade. But when you lead with credibility, reliability, and empathy, while keeping self-interest in check, trust becomes your strongest leadership asset. What’s one leadership behaviour that helps you build trust?
